Toys for Tots Canada Holiday Fundraiser

In the two months leading up to the holiday season, SBM proudly coordinated a variety of internal fundraising events in support of Toys for Tots Canada.

These initiatives included a bake sale, a 50/50 raffle, an internal breakfast, and a raffle basket, all of which saw strong participation from our team. Every dollar raised was donated directly to Toys for Tots Canada to support their mission of bringing joy to children in need.

In addition to fundraising efforts, our SBM “elves” generously volunteered their time to purchase an incredible number of toys for children in our community. This collective effort reflects the generosity, teamwork, and community spirit that define SBM, especially during the holiday season.

Introducing Young Minds to Structural Engineering

SBM was proud to take part in the Canadian National Institute for the Blind’s STEM Program, an inspiring initiative designed to introduce young students with visual impairments to the world of science and engineering.

Through this program, we had the opportunity to introduce students aged 5 to 13 to the fundamentals of structural engineering in a hands-on, engaging, and fully accessible way.

Using tactile construction materials, tower-strength challenges, and even an earthquake simulation, students put their creativity and problem-solving skills to the test. The results were nothing short of impressive—these bright young engineers built tall, resilient structures that stood strong against some serious shaking. Their curiosity, determination, and willingness to experiment were truly inspiring to witness.

A special thank-you goes to SBM’s own Meenu for representing our team and helping create such a meaningful and memorable experience for the students. We’re grateful to have been part of a program that not only sparks interest in STEM, but also reinforces the importance of accessibility, inclusion, and opportunity for all.

Business Cares Food Drive 2025

SBM staff, along with their friends and family, proudly participated in the Business Cares Food Drive in support of the London Food Bank.

Throughout the weekend, our team connected with community members, shared conversations, and helped collect much-needed donations for local families.

A heartfelt thank you to Megan’s No Frills for hosting us, LHBA for helping with the organization, and to everyone who stopped by the store to donate and show their support. Your generosity truly makes a difference.

We were honoured to once again take part in this important annual initiative and to support a cause that plays such a vital role in strengthening our community and helping those in need.

SBM Walks in Support of the Terry Fox Legacy

While this event was focused on raising awareness, it provided a powerful opportunity for our team to come together, reflect, and show support for those impacted by cancer. Terry Fox’s story continues to inspire perseverance, courage, and hope—values that resonate deeply with our team.

It was a meaningful day spent connecting as colleagues while recognizing the importance of ongoing awareness and advocacy in the fight against cancer.

SBM Supports Community at the 5K Foam Fest in London, Ontario

The SBM team participated in the 5K 2025 Foam Fest in support of Make-A-Wish Canada.

At SBM, getting involved in our community is something we genuinely care about. It’s not just about the work we do day-to-day, but also about showing up and supporting causes that matter. That’s what made the 5K Foam Fest such a great fit for our team.

If you haven’t seen it before, the Foam Fest is equal parts obstacle course and all-out fun. It gave our team a chance to step away from the office, challenge ourselves a bit, and enjoy something active together. There were a lot of laughs along the way, and a few wipeouts too.

More importantly, the event supports Make-A-Wish Canada, helping grant life-changing wishes for children facing critical illnesses. Knowing we were part of something bigger made the experience even more meaningful.

It was a great reminder that taking time to connect as a team, stay active, and give back can all go hand in hand. These are the kinds of moments we value, and we’re always looking for more ways to stay involved and support the communities we’re proud to be part of.

SBM Ltd. Donates $75,000 to Support STEAM Maker Space at London Children’s Museum.

We are excited to announce that SBM has donated $75,000 to sponsor the STEAM Maker Space at the new London Children’s Museum. It is currently under construction at 100 Kellogg Lane in London, Ontario. This contribution reflects our commitment to supporting the education and development of future generations.

The London Children’s Museum has been a beloved institution in our community for over 45 years, and its new location will provide enhanced opportunities for play-based learning. The Maker Space within the Discovery Lab is a key feature of the museum’s new design, offering children and youth hands-on experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

Supporting the Maker Space is especially meaningful for us at SBM. Many of our staff have young children who will benefit from the museum’s educational exhibits, and the museum holds a special place in our hearts from our own childhoods. This donation allows us to invest in a project that aligns with our company’s values and supports the enrichment of our community.

“We are so grateful to Strik, Baldinelli, Moniz Ltd. for their generous support of the new London Children’s Museum and the new Maker Space,” said Kate Ledgley, Executive Director at the London Children’s Museum. “This donation will help us better serve older children and youth by providing them with access to specialized technology and innovative learning opportunities.”

Q&A WITH TOMISLAV

01. Tell us a bit about you

I've been married to my beautiful wife Kerri for 10 years, and we have 3 active kids. 1 boy, our oldest, and 2 girls. I enjoy spending my free time with family, attending my kids sporting events, and staying active while leading a healthy lifestyle. Mainly, my hobbies include going to the gym or spending time outdoors - camping, hunting, and fishing. I started working at SBM in 2010, as the first Structural designer/draftsperson on staff full time. As one of only 6 or 7 employees at that time, I have been fortunate to see SBM grow into the multi-disciplinary firm with 130+ staff we are today.

02. How has your role evolved since you joined the team?

My role has evolved quite significantly. Starting out, I was the only designer preparing our structural drawings. I had to lead projects, prepare drawings, attend to sites, and help develop our company drafting standards. As we grew, there was a need to add additional members to the design and drafting team. I began to oversee, train and manage a handful of team members. As we grew into multi-disciplinary offerings, my role evolved further still into leading small, medium and large multi-disciplinary projects through concept development, building design, municipal approvals, and prime consulting. I now oversee a team of 11 Technicians and Technologists who act as both our firms structural drafting team and building design group.

03. What do you love most about your job?

I love the variety of projects we take on, big and small. There is always something to challenge you, and you can always learn something new. I also love seeing our projects come to life . It's a great feeling to have buildings throughout our community I remember myself and my team working on. Pointing these out to friends and family, while seeing people actively living and working in these spaces is something that keeps me motivated each and every day."

Born and raised in London, I’m a proud graduate of Western University. My journey has been diverse, including 14 years in the Canadian Forces Naval Reserve, which I balanced with my education and early professional career. As a married father of two and a hockey enthusiast, I also enjoy being a handyman in my spare time.

02. What do you think is the most important skill that a successful professional needs to have?

Curiosity is the engine of achievement. It’s what drives us to keep learning, to challenge our assumptions, and to approach problems with a critical and innovative mindset. In an ever-changing world, I firmly believe that staying curious is not just beneficial but essential for success and personal fulfillment.

03. What inspired you to join the team here?

Growing up with exposure to the construction industry, I was naturally inclined towards engineering, driven by the desire to positively influence our built environment. There’s a profound sense of pride and accomplishment in contributing to tangible community landmarks. The entrepreneurial spirit of my parents also drew me to SBM. 01. Tell us a bit about you

I’m a London local through and through, with my roots and education firmly planted in this community. After earning my diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technician with a Design Major from Fanshawe College, I embarked on my career journey which has now spanned 16 rewarding years. My expertise lies in leading multi-unit family projects and nurturing client relationships, ensuring our footprint in the community is not only lasting but personal. Leading the mechanical division with the support of a fantastic staff and leadership group makes the operational side of my role both fulfilling and dynamic.

02. What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of work, I’m an enthusiastic sports fan, both as a spectator and participant. My interest in vintage wines offers a blend of research and enjoyment, much like preserving heritage traditions. But nothing compares to the joy I find in spending quality time with my wife Elizabeth, our daughters Sofia and Gabriella, and our extended circle of family and friends.

03. What do you love most about your job?

The day-to-day challenges are what fuel my passion for my job. Be it organizational, client-related, staff-focused, or personal hurdles, navigating through them and finding successful solutions is incredibly rewarding. The true triumph, however, is in tackling these challenges as a team. Both our failures and our successes are valuable teachers, and they have been instrumental in sculpting my professional identity.

Matt's role and impact at SBM go beyond just leading a division—it's about fostering growth, championing community engagement, and ensuring that every project undertaken is imbued with quality and care.

With a Master of Engineering Science Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering specializing in Wind Engineering from The University of Western Ontario, Graeme leads with both technical finesse and project management skills. As the Structural Engineering Manager for the Commercial/Large Building division, he's the engineer of record for several of our mid and high-rise multi-residential buildings across southern Ontario and the G.T.A. Moreover, Graeme expertly oversees SBM’s Structural Engineering projects consisting of concrete box culverts, retaining walls, sheet pile walls, temporary excavation shoring, and bridge evaluations for the MTO, municipalities, and private developers.

In this spotlight feature, we delve into Graeme's journey, his evolution at SBM, and what ignites his passion for structural engineering and design.

Q&A WITH GRAEME

01. Tell us a bit about you

My interest in engineering and building design began as a child, growing up in Guelph, Ontario. My father worked at a consulting wind engineering firm, and I was fascinated with the model studies conducted on tall buildings in their wind tunnels and water flumes whenever I visited. This interest, combined with my aptitude for maths and sciences, led me to a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering at McMaster University in Hamilton, and a Master of Engineering Science degree at the University of Western Ontario in London. I joined the company (SBA at the time) in July 2010, eager to design structures and structural components for Aaron and Mike, and just as eager to develop spreadsheets and tools to expand the company's design capabilities and streamline our design processes. Joining the company when it was only a dozen or so people gave me the opportunity to be involved in the design of a variety of structural projects, ranging from buried infrastructure to residential homes to agricultural facilities to multi-unit residential buildings, built from a wide array of structural systems and materials. As SBA grew and became SBM, I worked with others at the company to develop SBM's SX-N-WD software, for the design and optimization of midrise wood-framed buildings. Later, with the passing of Mike Baldinelli (SBM's principal, and my mentor), my focus shifted to the design of taller buildings consisting mainly of cast-in-place concrete and precast concrete. My current role is shifting away from day-to-day project management to focus on technical oversight of the structural division, to provide engineering review of projects, and to continue to develop and maintain the division's technical standards. Outside of work, I have been married for 18 years, and have two wonderful daughters, ages 14 and 11. We have a houseful of pets, and love to spend our time in nature, preferring a trip to a quiet cottage in the summer over a visit to a big city. I love to spend my evenings by my wood-burning fireplace, researching my family's ancestry, or watching a historical documentary. I consider myself a stained glass artisan and enjoy woodworking as well. I like to work around the house and to build and fix things, often having numerous projects on the go at once. My goal is to one day retire to a secluded ocean-front property on Canada's east coast.

02. What DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

The people I get to collaborate and problem solve with every day. I love being able to work with colleagues and clients to find cost-effective, efficient solutions to design and construction issues.

03. What do you think is the most important skill that a successful professional needs to have?

The ability to adapt to changes. Whether it be adapting to a client's individual needs and requests, or adapting to changes in the building codes or municipal regulations, there are always changes that professionals will face. Being able to adapt to these changes throughout the project and throughout your career will allow you to serve the community with regards to safety, and serve the client with regards to cost-effectiveness.

Graeme's journey from a young boy intrigued by wind engineering to a respected leader in structural engineering exemplifies the power of passion and commitment. His focus on collaboration and adaptability makes him a valuable asset to SBM. His story is a source of inspiration and a testament to the company's commitment to excellence and innovation in the field of structural engineering.

Darryl, with his impressive expertise in the structural design of low- and mid-rise buildings, has been a pivotal figure at the firm since 2014. His skills in analyzing and designing projects using various materials like concrete, structural steel, wood, heavy timber, masonry, and light gauge steel is noteworthy. Darryl's specialization extends across residential, multi-residential, and Industrial-Commercial-Institutional sectors.

As the manager of both the structural division in Kitchener as well as the Kitchener office overall, Darryl adeptly juggles day-to-day operations while leading a range of structural and multi-disciplinary projects. His extensive portfolio also includes engineering services for municipal bridge projects and reserve fund studies.

In this spotlight feature, we explore Darryl's personal and professional journey, the pivotal lessons he's learned, and what he cherishes most about his role at SBM.

Q&A WITH DARRYL

01. Tell us a bit about you

I graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a degree in civil (structural) engineering. After living and working in smaller towns for several years, my family and I started a new adventure in 2012 when we moved to the big City of Kitchener so I could start working at (at the time what was) a small engineering firm named Strik Baldinelli & Associates. My wife, Gina, and I have four fantastic children ranging in age from 5 to 16, 3 girls and 1 boy. We also have a very rambunctious 2-year-old dog, a goldendoodle named Taco. I grew up mostly in Tillsonburg, Ontario. My wife is originally from Kansas City, Missouri and we drive down every year to visit her side of the family. When not in the office, my free time is most often spent with my family, either playing basketball with my son, doing arts and crafts with the younger girls, running with our dog, or watching superhero movies with our oldest.

02. What have been some of the most important lessons you've learned throughout your career?

Two of the most important lessons I've learned are to always be honest with everyone, and to respect the knowledge and experience that every single person involved in a project brings.

03. what do you enjoy most about working at SBm?

Everyone cares deeply about the work they are doing.

Kevin Moniz leads Strik Baldinelli Moniz Ltd. as a co-owner and Principal, overseeing the planning, geomatics, building design, and our civil, structural (large buildings), mechanical, and electrical engineering divisions. His tenure at the company and his leadership across multiple disciplines reflect a dedication that’s rooted in a solid educational background and hands-on experience.

01. Tell us a bit about you

I grew up on a farm outside of Glencoe, Ontario with loving and supportive parents and an older brother. I developed a work ethic and a passion for problem-solving and engineering while working on the family tobacco farm, doing renovation projects, and working at the local hardware and lumber supply store. I am a devoted family man to my wonderful wife Charity and amazing kids Adyson, Kole, Cooper, and Emersyn. I enjoy playing, watching, and coaching sports and playing/listening to music.

02. how long have you been with the company?

03. how has your role evolved since you joined the team?

I started at SBA in 2007 as a structural engineering trainee and became a structural engineer in 2011. In 2013, my focus switched to Civil Engineering as Director of our Civil Engineering firm (now a division of SBM). In 2015, SBM was formed and I became a Principal, in charge of Civil Engineering. I am currently Principal in charge of our Planning, Geomatics, Building Design, and our Civil, Structural (Large Buildings), Mechanical, and Electrical Divisions.

Kevin's journey from a hands-on trainee to a visionary Principal encapsulates the ethos of SBM – growth, innovation, and leadership. His story is not just one of professional success, but also personal commitment to his family and community.

As one of the original founders of Strik Baldinelli Moniz Ltd., Aaron Strik has been instrumental in shaping the company’s growth and success. With his keen oversight of the financial operations and the administration team, Aaron brings a wealth of experience and dedication to his role. He also plays a crucial part in mentoring and providing oversight to the structural small buildings division. Aaron holds a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Civil Engineering/Co-operative Education Program from The University of Waterloo, equipping him with the knowledge and skills to lead.

01. Tell us a bit about you

I was born and raised in the small town of Poplar Hill, just west of London. I completed my engineering studies at the University of Waterloo. In 2004, Mike Baldinelli and I co-founded Strik Baldinelli and Associates, which has evolved into what is now Strik Baldinelli Moniz Ltd. I'm happily married to Anna, my lifelong love, and together we have two wonderful daughters, Claire and Katie. Our family enjoys traveling, having kitchen dance parties, and cheering on our favorite football teams on Sundays. Personally, I'm a diehard fan of the San Francisco 49ers (Go Niners!!).

02. What challenges have you faced in your career?

Losing a business partner was the hardest thing I've ever faced. It was incredible to see how the SBM Family rallied, supported each other, and continued to grow the company in Mike's honor .

03. What do you love most about your job?

Watching our staff grow and progress in their careers has been incredibly rewarding.

Ontario Land Surveying / Geomatics Services Announcement

Strik, Baldinelli, Moniz Ltd. (SBM) is pleased to announce another expansion of our service offerings with the formation of our sister company, SBM Geomatics Ltd. (SBMG)

Established in November 2019, SBMG provides professional land surveying/geomatics services to both public and private sectors while complimenting the multi-disciplinary engineering and planning services already offered by SBM.

Gavin P. T. Seaman OLS, OLIP, NBLS is the Managing Principal and Ontario Land Surveyor with the intent to expand the SBM team and its services. With over 35 years of legal land surveying/geomatics project experience in various provinces throughout Canada, Mr. Seaman provides exceptional service and geomatics advice for our clients as a sister company to SBM.

SBMG is a dedicated team of Ontario Land Surveyor and geomatics survey technician/technologist professionals invested in the latest surveying equipment, staff training, and development to succeed in this rapidly evolving industry. This enables us to stay on the leading edge of technology and techniques to deliver on our primary focus of quality service to our clients.

Prior to design, SBMG confirms property lines, easements, and geographic features to accurately inform the project planners, lawyers, architects, and engineers of land size; location of property lines, easements; and topographical information, both natural and constructed. The preciseness of this data allows the project team to make informed decisions that shape their design and documents. Having an accurate plan of the land’s natural geographical features can help the team decide whether to leave those features as-is or terraform them.

Before groundbreaking, SBMG can confirm and field locate the in-situ location of property lines, easements, etc. and accurately layout the building(s) and other site features. After construction, we can prepare as-constructed surveys/plans, confirm grading general conformance, accurately locate the building(s) relative to property lines, and prepare Surveyors Real Property Report(s), certification letters, etc. for property records and/or to aid in future property sales.

Our goal is to continue to build a team that is always learning and growing so that we can continue to go above and beyond for our clients.

Strik, Baldinelli, Moniz Ltd. (SBM) has recently expanded its service offerings with the acquisition of Kirkness Consulting Inc. (KCI) Urban and Rural Planning.

We have welcomed Laverne Kirkness as our Principal Planner at SBM. KCI was a small, personalized, land use planning firm that has been operating within the London and Middlesex region since 1983. Together, our combined strengths will be essential to meet our clients’ growing needs and expectations in London, surrounding municipalities, and beyond. This acquisition is complimentary to the multi-disciplined engineering and Ontario Land Surveying services already offered by SBM.

The integration of KCI has enabled us to provide our clients with greater insight and expertise from a more diversified SBM team. SBM is now working with its clients to provide:

Nick Dyjach has also joined our Planning Team as a Planner III and OPPI Candidate with 10 years of planning experience in private and municipal sectors. With experience in Alberta and Ontario, Nick has acquired a diverse range of urban planning, design, and project management skills.
